Raiders sweep Midland in GPAC doubleheader

Apr 16, 2007

Northwestern won a pair of league games, over Midland Lutheran, on Monday night, by the scores of 4-3 and 4-3.  The Red Raiders improved their GPAC record to 9-5 and are now 24-10 overall.

Midland jumped on Raider ace Mihai Burlea in the second inning for three runs on two hits, a walk, and a wild pitch.  The Raiders would respond in the bottom half with back to back home runs to start the inning.  Senior Michael Janssen led off hitting his third home run of the season, then on the next pitch junior Codie Zeutenhorst blasted his 11th round tripper of the year to pull the Raiders within one run.  Northwestern tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth when Matt Gray singled with two outs, stole second, and scored on an Austin Malone single.  Burlea settled in and only allowed two base runners after the second inning.  With the game tied at three the Raiders came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh needing a run to win.  Matt Gray and Austin Malone both singled to start the inning.  Joe Heitritter sacrificed the runners to second and third, and following a intentional walk to Jake Jansen, the Raiders would win the game on a Warrior error.

Burlea picked up the win (7-0), allowing three hits, walking two, and striking out nine, increasing his single season record to 77.  Offensively, Northwestern pounded 10 hits, two each by Malone, Gray, and Janssen.  Gray also scored two of the four Raider runs.

Northwestern completed the sweep behind the right arm of Dusty Meyn.  The Raiders scored in the first inning, to take a 1-0 lead, on a Grant Wall sacrifice fly to score Joe Heitritter.  They would add two more in the third inning.  Austin Malone singled, Heitritter walked, Wall singled home Malone, and Michael Janssen hit a sacrifice fly to score Heitritter.  Heitritter would again touch homeplate, this time in the fifth inning, when a Midland pitcher balked with the bases loaded.  Heitritter's third run of the day proved to be an important run as Midland would strike in the sixth and seventh innings.  Midland scored two runs in the sixth on five hits to cut the lead to 4-2.  Raider closed Justin Lane pitched the seventh inning allowing one unearned run, striking out two, and walking one, earning his sixth save of the season.

Meyn improved to 4-3 on the season for the Raiders.  The senior pitched six innings gave up 10 hits, allowed two runs, and struck out one Warrior.  Offensively, Northwestern had seven hits, Heitritter and Wall had two apiece.  Wall drove in two runs and Heitritter scored three runs.

Northwestern will next travel to Yankton on Friday, April 20th for a 4:306:30 doubleheader vs. Mt. Marty.
