Raiders Sweep Morningside in Baseball Doubleheader

The Red Raider baseball team swept a key GPAC doubleheader against Morningside College, 5-0 and 11-0 (five innings). Northwestern moves into a tie for second place in the league standings with a 7-3 record and are 22-8 overall.
Junior righthander Mihai Burlea pitched six shutout innings and gave up just two hits in leading NWC to a 5-0 win in the first game. Burlea walked six and struck out nine, which set a new single season record for strikeouts in a season with 68. He broke the mark of 67 set by Bob Van Es in 1971 and 1973. Sophomore Andrew Brower pitched a scoreless seventh inning to complete the shutout.
Northwestern broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fifth inning when Grant Wall singled home both Justin Lane and Matt Gray to take a 2-0 lead. The Raiders added three more runs in the seventh inning, all unearned. Gray recorded an RBI double in the inning and later scored off a double steal. NWC totaled eight hits in game one, led by a 3-3 effort by Gray. Five other Raiders added one hit each, including Jake Jansen who extended his streak to 11 games.
Dusty Meyn pitched five scoreless innings in game two and the Raider offense pounded out 12 hits and scored 11 runs in their 11-0 win over the Mustangs in the nightcap. The senior righthander evened his record to 3-3 overall and pitched his first shutout of the season. Meyn allowed just two hits and recorded two strikeouts and 10 groundouts in the win.
Offensively, Jake Jansen went 2-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the attack, extending his season-high hit streak to 12 games. Michael Janssen belted his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning, and went 2-2 on the day. Curt Bomgaars went 2-4 at the plate with a run scored and three RBIs and Justin Lane went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Coach Wede's squad will next host Midland Lutheran on Friday, April 13, in another GPAC doubleheader at 4/6:00 p.m.
