Koerselman Improves to 6-0 as NWC Baseball Team Splits With Mayville State

Apr 10, 2007

Senior Jake Koerselman improved to 6-0 this season as he led the Raiders to a 12-2, five-inning win over Mayville State in game one of a non-conference doubleheader Monday afternoon. The visiting Comets, however, defeated NWC 4-3 in game two to record the split.

Koerselman pitched the five-inning complete game as the righthander gave up just two hits and no earned runs. He struck out four and walked three to record his sixth win of the season, which matches his career-high set in 2006 when he went 6-4. The Raider offense erupted for 12 hits off Comet pitching, highlighted by freshman Brad Payne who went 3-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Matt Gray went 2-4 with four RBIs, including a two-run single in the Raiders eight-run third inning. Jake Jansen, Joe Heitritter and Justin Lane added two hits apiece in the win. Codie Zeutenhorst belted his 10th home run of the season, a three-run shot in the third inning.

In game two, the Comets took an early 3-0 lead as they scored a run in each of the first three innings off NWC starter Joe Grady. The Raiders scored a run in the bottom half of the third but Mayville answered with one more run in the fifth to take command, 4-1. NWC threatened in the sixth inning as Grant Wall walked, stole second and scored on the next play when Gray singled to cut the lead down to 4-2. Jansen followed with a single to set up runners on first and second and no outs. The Comets put in freshman ace, Brock Gnadt, who retired Zeutenhorst, Michael Janssen and Curt Bomgaars to end the threat. NWC scored one more run in the seventh to make it a one-run game, 4-3, but could not tie it up.

Offensively, the Raiders totaled six hits, led by Grant Wall who went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs. Jansen extended his season-high hit streak to 10 games as the sophomore went 1-3. Gray, Zeutenhorst and Justin Lane also recorded one hit. Grady (3-4) picked up the loss as the junior pitched four plus innings and gave up four hits and two earned runs. Andrew Brower, Andrew Engesser and Lane combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief.

Coach Wede's squad, who improved to 20-8 overall, will resume play on Wednesday, April 11 for a GPAC doubleheader against Morningside. Game times at Lewis and Clark Field in Sioux City are 5/7:00 p.m.
