Raiders Split GPAC Doubleheader With USF

The Red Raiders split a GPAC doubleheader against USF Friday afternoon by the scores of 5-2 and 1-2. The Raiders are now tied for fourth in the league with USF at 5-3 and are 19-7 overall.

In the first game of a GPAC twinbill played in Orange City this afternoon. NWC scored two runs in the second inning off three hits and a Cougar error. Michael Janssen led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop on a ground ball hit by Joe Heitritter. Justin Lane hit an RBI single, which scored Janssen and moved up Heitritter to second. Grant Wall followed with a two-out single which scored Heitritter and gave NWC a 2-0 lead.

USF scored a run in both the fourth and sixth innings to tie the score at two. NWC, however, responded with three runs in the home half of the sixth to take the lead back for good. Curt Bomgaars had an RBI double and later scored a run in the decisive sixth inning to lead the Raiders.

Mihai Burlea improved to 5-0 with six solid innings of two-hit ball. He gave up just one earned run and struck out 11. Justin Lane pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his fifth save. Northwestern had a total of eight hits, two each by Janssen, Wall and Jake Jansen.

Game two featured a pitcher's dual between USF starter Doug Thompson and NWC starter Dusty Meyn. Meyn allowed just four hits and two unearned runs, striking out four in seven innings. The Cougars scored both of their runs in the first inning after a hit batsman and a couple of NWC errors. The Raider offense managed just two hits off Thompson, who pitched the complete seven innings and struck out one. Grant Wall and Jake Jansen each had one single for the Raiders, who scored their run in the sixth inning. Jansen extended his hit streak to a season-high eight games.

NW will next play Mayville State in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday beginning at noon.
