Raider Baseball Team to Play Mayville State in a Non-Conference Double Header

Apr 9, 2007

GAMETIME... Monday, April 9 at Noon/2:00 p.m. in Orange City, Iowa against Mayville State in a non-conference doubleheader. Home games are played on the campus of MOC-Floyd Valley High School.

SCOUTING REPORT... Mayville State hails from the Dakota Athletic Conference and comes into today's matchup with an overall mark of 12-5. Due to the weather, the Comets have not played since March 28 when they split a doubleheader against Mount Marty, 1-2 and 10-1. They are led by 2006 1st team all-conference utility player Mick Berry, who returns after a junior season where he ranked second on the team with a .373 batting average and led the team with 46 RBIs. This season, Berry is batting .344 with a pair of home runs and 13 RBIs. Junior Andy Ziegler leads the squad with a .463 batting average. He has 11 RBIs and seven runs scored. Junior Kyle Swenson is batting .406 this year with a team-high 16 RBIs and is third in stolen bases with 15.

Anchoring the pitching staff are senior Eric Deisler and junior Paul Waterman. Deisler  is coming off a 6-4 record in 2006 and is 1-0 with a 4.97 ERA this season. In 15 2/3 innings pitched, Waterman is 1-2 with a 4.60 ERA. A pair of talented newcomers have joined the Comet pitching staff in 2007. Brock Knadt, a 6-4 freshman, is a perfect 3-0 this season with a team-best 2.57 ERA. Junior Dan Knox, a transfer from Tahuya, Wash., is 2-1 with two saves. In 19 innings, Knox has struck out 24 batters and allowed just one free pass.

LAST TIME OUT... NWC improved to 19-7 overall, 5-3 in the GPAC, after they split a pair of games against the University of Sioux Falls last Friday. The Raiders defeated the Cougars in game one, 5-2, as they scored two runs in the second and three more in the fifth. Grant Wall, Jake Jansen and Michael Janssen all had two hits for NWC, who totaled eight hits in the win. Curt Bomgaars added an RBI double and a run scored. Junior Mihai Burlea (5-0) pitched six strong innings as he gave up just two hits and one earned run. He struck out 11. Closer Justin Lane pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his fifth save.

A pitchers dual ensued in game two as Cougar starter Doug Thompson outdueled Raider starter Dusty Meyn for a 2-1, USF win. Meyn (2-3) went the distance on the mound, giving up four hits and no earned runs while striking out four. He gave up a pair of unearned runs in the first inning but shutout the Cougars the rest of the way. The Raiders managed just two hits off of Thompson and scored one run in the sixth inning. Grant Wall hit a one-out single, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Matt Gray. He later scored on a wild pitch for NWC's only run.

RED RAIDER NOTES... Jake Jansen increased his season-high hit streak to eight games with one hit in the Raiders 1-2 loss against USF. The sophomore leads the team with a .500 batting average and 29 RBIs. Austin Malone, who missed the Sioux Falls games due to injury, is batting .395 and is second on the team with 26 runs scored. Codie Zeutenhorst leads the GPAC with nine home runs. He is batting .390 with 28 RBIs. Five other NWC regulars are batting over .300 as the Raiders boast a league-best .352 batting average.

Senior Jake Koerselman and junior Mihai Burlea lead the pitching staff with 5-0 records. Koerselman, who needs just one more win to be 10th all-time in NW history, has 22 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings pitched and boast an ERA of 2.59. Burlea, who had his consecutive scoreless streak snapped of 25 innings pitched against USF, leads the GPAC with 59 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched. Joe Grady (3-3, 3.63) and Dusty Meyn (2-3, 3.60) round out a veteran and potent starting rotation. Third baseman and closer Justin Lane is 1-0 with five saves and has a team-best 1.23 ERA.

NEXT UP... NWC continues a busy week with a pair of league games on Wednesday, April 11, in Sioux City against Morningside. The doubleheader at Lewis and Clark Field will begin at 5:00 p.m.
