Raiders Sweep Concordia in GPAC Baseball Action

Northwestern swept a league doubleheader from Concordia Monday night by the scores of 7-6 and 5-3. The Raiders have won four consecutive games and improve to 18-6 overall, 4-2 in the GPAC.

The Raiders jumped on Bulldog starting pitcher Kyle Spencer in the second inning of game one, scoring five runs on five hits. Grant Wall sparked the inning with a three-run home run, his fourth of the season. Concordia scored three runs in the fourth inning off NWC starter Jake Koerselman to cut the lead back to two, 3-5. After a run by Northwestern in the bottom of the fourth, Concordia scored two more in the fifth, chasing Koerselman from the game. The Raiders added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 7-5 lead. The Bulldogs once again rallied in the sixth with an unearned run to cut the deficit back to one but NWC relievers Justin Lane and Mihai Burlea closed the game with 1 2/3 innings of no-hit ball to seal the win.

Koerselman picked up the win as the senior scattered 11 hits and allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings. He improved to 5-0 this season. Burlea picked up his first save of the season as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning and extended his scoreless streak to 21 consecutive innings. Offensively, Michael Janssen went 3-3 with an RBI to lead the Raiders. Joe Heitritter added two hits and Wall went 1-4 with a run and three RBIs.

Northwestern completed the doubleheader sweep as they downed Concordia in game two, 5-3. After trailing 1-3, NWC scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead for good, 4-3. Both Justin Lane and Jake Jansen recorded RBI singles in the four-hit, three run inning. The Raiders added an insurance run in the fifth inning on Jansen's second home run of the game and third of the season.

Joe Grady improved to 3-3 this season as the junior pitched six strong innings, giving up just three runs. Lane pitched a perfect seventh inning to pick up his fourth save. Offensively, Jansen went 3-3 with a pair of solo home runs and  three RBIs. Curt Bomgaars added a pair of hits and a run scored.

The Raiders will next host USF on Friday, April 6 at 4:00/6:00 p.m.
