Mar 26, 2007
The Northwestern baseball team split a GPAC doubleheader against Doane Monday night, 19-3 and 4-5. NWC is now 14-6 overall, 2-2 in the league.
The Raiders erupted with 19 runs in the first four innings en route to a 19-3 win over Doane in the first game of the GPAC twinbill Monday evening. Grant Wall went a perfect 4-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs to lead the offense. Michael Janssen had three hits, including a three-run home run in the second inning. The senior scored three runs and drove in a career-high seven RBIs. Scott Mineart and Justin Boersma each added two hits and two RBIs. Senior righthander Jake Koerselman went four solid innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. He gave up five hits, two runs and struck out six Tiger batters.
After scoring 19 runs in the first game of a doubleheader against Doane, the Raider bats cooled off in game two as they were defeated, 4-5.
The host Tigers scored three runs in the first inning off Raider starting pitcher Dusty Meyn to take a 3-1 lead. NWC tied the score in the top of the third inning when Matt Gray led off with a double, followed by a walk to Austin Malone. Jake Jansen then singled to drive in both Gray and Malone to tie the game at three. The Raiders grabbed the lead in the fourth inning when Joe Heitritter scored on a sacrifice fly by Gray. Doane, however, took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning when they scored a pair of runs on three hits. Tiger reliever Trevor Zelinski then pitched three innings of no-hit ball to shut the door on any NWC rally.
Offensively, Jake Jansen led the attack with two hits and three RBIs. Wall, Heitritter, Lane and Gray all had one hit for NWC. Meyn suffered his second loss of the season to drop to 2-2 overall. The senior went four innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs and striking out one.
Coach Wede's squad will play a non-conference doubleheader today against Waldorf today in Orange City. First game begins at 3:00 pm
