Mar 21, 2007

The Raiders swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Martin Luther College (Minn.) yesterday by the scores of 7-4 and 7-4. NWC improves to 12-4 overall and will next host Dakota Wesleyan on Friday afternoon.

In the final tune-up before the conference season, Northwestern fell behind, 0-1, after the first inning against the host Knights. Martin Luther scored a run on a pair of singles in the top of the first inning off of Red Raider starting pitcher, Jake Koerselman. NWC tied the score in the bottom of the third when Grant Wall, who reached base on a Knight error, scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Malone. The Raiders took command during their next at-bat, scoring four runs on three hits, all with two outs. Both Wall and Codie Zeutenhorst hit home runs during the four-run inning. Leading 5-1, NWC scored their final two runs in the sixth off back-to-back doubles by Matt Gray and Justin Lane, followed by a triple by Wall. Martin Luther came back in the seventh, scoring three runs off the Raiders bullpen, but fell short in the end. Jake Koerselman picked up his third win of the season as he went five innings, giving up three hits and one run. He struck out six. Wall led the offense with two hits in four at-bats and scored two runs. Zeutenhorst (2-3) and Gray (2-3) were the other top Raider hitters.

In game two, NWC scored a run in the first inning when Jake Jansen singled and drove in Wall to take a 1-0 lead. Martin Luther scored four runs on three hits in the third off of Raider starter Dusty Meyn. The Raiders took the lead back in the fourth scoring four runs on three hits and a walk. Zeutenhorst and Michael Janssen led off with back-to-back doubles, followed by a walk to Curt Bomgaars. Janssen then scored on a groundout by Justin Boersma, which was followd by a two-run home run by Gray. NWC added an insurance run in both the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by another home run by Zeutenhost, to take a 7-4 lead. The Raider bullpen shut the door on any Knight rally as Andrew Brouwer and Justin Lane combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief to seal the win. Starter Dusty Meyn picked up his second win of the season as he went four innings and gave up six hits and four runs.

Coach Wede's squad, now 12-4, will begin conference play on Friday when they host Dakota Wesleyan.
