Northwestern’s fourth Netherlands Bike Tour (June 29-July 11, 2007) took cyclists from the North Sea coast to Germany, through the provinces of North Holland, Friesland, Drenthe and Overijssel. Beginning in Haarlem, bikers visited the towns and attractions of Purmerend, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Hindeloopen, Sneek, Akkrum, Dwingeloo, Ommen, Hardenberg and Ootmarssum.
They biked through old Dutch merchant towns and past windmills and canals and stopped for visits to art museums and other sites of historical significance. The all-inclusive tour spoiled bikers with gourmet food and plenty of Dutch history and cultural experiences.
The tour was organized through Eurotrail and led by NWC alumnus James Kennedy ’84, who teaches modern Dutch history at the Free University in Amsterdam.
The next Netherlands Bike Tour will be during the summer of 2010. Contact alumni director Rachel Van Den Broek to add your name to the list of alumni seeking more information about the 2010 Netherlands Bike Tour.
