Tutoring options
Northwestern professors have high expectations for student achievement. Sometimes it is challenging for students to meet those expectations without a little support. That is why most professors select tutors for their courses and encourage students to take advantage of the tutors’ knowledge and experience. Tutors can provide the assistance needed to help both high achievers and struggling students meet and exceed professors’ expectations.
All tutors are trained by academic support department professionals to be effective. The tutors are familiar with content knowledge, able to explain the material clearly, and able to answer questions. They also have a positive outlook, believe students’ learning can be enhanced and that their grades can improve, demonstrate patience and understanding, and have a genuine enthusiasm for the subject. The tutors offer many suggestions and ideas about how to study, how to manage time, and what to expect from professors.
Free tutoring services are provided in the following ways:
One-to-one tutoring

Tutors are available to help with virtually all courses. Students can view the appointment times as well as tutors’ names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses on the bulletin board outside of the academic support department offices.
Math center
Van Peursem Hall 123
Two nights per week
Meet with a math tutor or study with friends. Tutors are good at making up practice problems to help you advance your level of critical thinking.
Science center
Van Peursem Hall 119
Monday–Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m.
Meet with a biology, chemistry or physics tutor or study with friends. Tutors can drill you on biology terms, make up practice chemistry questions, or explain physics problems to help you advance your level of critical thinking.
Writing center
Van Peursem Hall 127
Schedule appointments with writing tutors by signing up outside of the academic support department offices.
Study groups and review sessions
Professors and tutors plan study sessions for students periodically throughout the semester. The dates, times and locations of these sessions are usually announced in class. Students simply need to show up ready to participate and learn.
