Junior Scholars

Northwestern’s Junior Scholars program provides the opportunity for juniors and seniors to collaborate with a professor on an educational project or research. The experience often leads to presentations at academic conferences or publication in scholarly journals.

The program is great preparation for graduate school. Former Junior Scholars are now in medical school at the University of Iowa and Vanderbilt and pursuing doctorates in English at the University of Florida, American history at the University of Massachusetts, cognitive psychology at the University of Nebraska, and sociology at Michigan State University.

Junior Scholars have been involved in the following projects:
  • An art major wrote procedures for firing a new gas kiln and researched contemporary Christian visual artists.
  • A business major analyzed transportation logistics and their impact on international trade.
  • A computer science major wrote programming applications for PDAs.
  • An English major researched a 19th-century Southern fiction writer, traveling with a professor to the Duke University library to read archived documents.
  • A religion major examined postmodern forms of worship.
  • A philosophy major provided critical reading and commentary for a professor who is writing a book on philosophical anthropology from the perspective of Christian faith.
  • Sociology students examined how students’ personal networks influence choices related to major and career aspirations.
  • A Spanish major researched Bible verses that illustrate grammatical concepts.
Students may suggest Junior Scholar projects to faculty or be asked by professors to participate in such a project. The student/faculty team then submits an application to the academic dean for approval. Junior Scholars are awarded a stipend of $600 per semester.
