GEN101 Introduction to Christian Liberal Arts 2 credits
In ICLA, the student will learn to recognize a Christian academic community that starkly contrasts high school. We will represent the Christian liberal arts as a lived profession, discussing the ideal qualities of its members: the critical, active mind; thoughtful communication; and displaying a rigor in subjecting their scholarship to the demands of the Cross, while examining the Cross under the light of their academic work. (2 credits)
 
GEN109 Information Literacy 1 credit 
This is a course that is designed to help students systematically develop the skills, aptitudes and habits needed to effectively make use of the very best resources available in the ever expanding universe of information. With those skills, habits, and aptitudes the information literate person will not only be able to recognize when information is needed but also have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use it effectively. The course is designed to help any student develop literacy skills in every discipline on campus. (1 credit; non-yearly, consult department)
 
GEN205 Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar 2 credits
A seminar designed to expose Honors Program students to significant issues by means of interdisciplinary study of selected topics chose on a year-to-year basis. May be taken more than once provided a different seminar is offered. Must be taken twice to fulfill graduation requirements for the Honors Program. May be taken pass/no pass. Up to four credits of GEN205 may be substituted for General Education requirements if GEN205 seminars are taken for a letter grade. Pre-requisite: membership in the Honors Program or special permission from Honors Program Directors. (2 credits)
 
GEN250 Topics in Interdisciplinary Studies 1-4 credits
 
GEN313 Area Studies 4 credits
(General Education option under Cross-Cultural Studies) Course designed to introduce students to the phenomenon of a particular culture(s). Topics covered will vary, depending on subject interest of faculty. (4 credits; non-yearly, consult department)
 
GEN316 Cross Cultural Preparation 2 credits
This course is designed specifically for students planning to engage in an approved cross-cultural experience of at least six weeks duration during the following summer. The course is an introduction to the dynamics of culture and of communication between persons of different cultures and an overview of the structures of cultures in general. Students will do research on the specific people group among which they plan to live during the summer and prepare a paper on this people group. (1-4 credits; may be repeated; non-yearly, consult department)
 
GEN320 Cross-Cultural Readings, Reflections and Writings 2 credits
This class will allow students to compare, contrast and reflect on their recent cross-cultural experience vis-a-vis other NWC students who also participated in a recent cross-cultural experience. Through reflective discussions in class, readings, peer response, and writings, students will be challenged to analyze their own cultural assumptions as they assess their role in our increasingly pluralistic world. Prerequisite: Completion of recent 6-week or more study-abroad course or Summer of Service. (2 credits; non-yearly, consult department)
 
GEN350 Topics in Cross-Cultural Studies 2-6 credits
(General Education option under Cross-Cultural Studies) Northwestern College offers a variety of off-campus opportunities with Northwestern faculty in various countries around the world. These courses offer a unique opportunity for students to make the world their classroom, going beyond the confines of the traditional classroom. Topics covered may include, but are not limited to, language, politics, religion, business, education, music, history, and literature. Students are given an opportunity to examine a particular culture through various experiences, such as homestays, ethnographic observation/research, and placement in various social institutions. Recent trips have included: Germany, Mexico, Taiwan, Ireland, England, Jamaica, and the Caribbean. Open to all students. (2-6 credits, summer, may be repeated)

The primary emphasis is on the thought and culture of sub-Saharan Africa. Prerequisite: General Education Philosophy course 100 level. (4 credits; non-yearly, consult department)
