General education program
Students at Northwestern are preparing not just for careers, but for life. Northwestern’s general education program is the foundation of the wisdom education we seek to provide. It teaches students to think well, communicate clearly and engage the world with intelligence and compassion.
Students are required to take courses in a variety of disciplines as they meet the general education requirement. So any major will include basic knowledge of religion, the fine arts, history, a foreign language, literature, mathematics, science, philosophy and more. It’s true: Students often see the general education program as something to check off the list—at first. But once they’re experiencing courses in disciplines they never knew they enjoyed, some students reconsider their major. And most find out that the reading, writing and thinking skills they learn in their general education courses are more related to their major than they thought.
