Faculty awards
At Northwestern, you’ll study with faculty who have earned regional and national recognition for their teaching and research, including:
- Dr. Doug Anderson, history, recipient of the 2003 Arrington-Prucha Prize in Western American Religious History. The prize is given for the best essay of the year on religious history in the American West.
- Jeff Barker, theatre, named the 2006 Iowa Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Barker also was among 21 people highlighted by the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities in October 2004 as outstanding alumni of Christian colleges. He and his wife, Karen—also a Northwestern theatre professor—were among three Gold Medallion award recipients in Region Five of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCATF) in 2003. A year earlier, Jeff won the New Voices Iowa Playwrights Competition for his play Kin.
- Dr. Ralph Davis, biology, the recipient of a four-year $570,000 grant in 2001 from the National Institutes of Health and another $200,000 grant in 2006. The grants fund roundworm neurobiology research he is conducting with students that could help combat parasites in developing countries.
- Piet Koene, Spanish, named the 2004 Iowa Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
- Deb Menning, English, among nine recipients of 2004 Literacy Awards given by the Iowa Council of Teachers of English, and the only college teacher to be recognized.
