“It’s a joy to be part of an academic community that seeks and welcomes the presence of God. Here our learning is guided by the Holy Spirit, and our service to one another is a grateful response to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. In study and conversation, in worship and service, in all of life on and off campus, we listen for God’s voice and try to respond faithfully with love that is knowledgeable and well-informed.”
Rev. Van Oort pastored churches in Yakima, Wash., and Orange City before becoming Northwestern’s chaplain. As chaplain, he serves as pastor for all Northwestern students while they are away from their home churches and pastors and oversees programming for the college’s chapel worship services. He has joined students on short-term mission trips to Texas and Nicaragua and uses his skills as a former electrician to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. A Northwestern College alum, Van Oort also has an M.Div. from Western Theological Seminary, Michigan, and is ordained in the Reformed Church of America.
