“‘A Northwestern education can change someone’s life.’ I’ve heard that from many students over the years. To have the confidence and assurance that God has used me in that process in a small way is very satisfying.”
De Jong's role includes oversight of the college's enrollment and public relations offices and involvement in its advancement efforts. He seeks to cultivate relationships with a broad range of Northwestern's constituents, from prospective students to alumni and donors to the media.
De Jong graduated from Northwestern with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1971. He has worked at the college since then, first as an admissions counselor and most recently as the dean of enrollment services, overseeing both the admissions and financial aid offices. De Jong’s goal, both in admissions and now in advancement, is not only to enroll students who are a good fit for Northwestern’s “whole education for your whole life,” but also to help them and their families afford a Christian liberal arts education. While De Jong led the college's admissions efforts, Northwestern’s enrollment grew steadily to 1,300 students; the student body also became more diverse, geographically and ethnically.
